Cecilia Duarte
Soprano
Her voice is rich and resonant, yet contained and internal, as if she is holding all the light and love inside. The music simply flowed out of her, inspired by the truth of her words, always precisely dictated.

Praised as a “creamy-voiced mezzo-soprano” (The New York Times) who “soars and glides with crystalline beauty” (OperaWire), Cecilia Duarte has established herself as a commanding performer across repertoires both old and new. She has earned critical acclaim for her work on both the concert stage and as a recording artist, including as a soloist on the GRAMMY Award-winning album Duruflé: The Complete Choral Works.
A passionate champion for early music, Duarte has appeared as Dido in the Baroque-inspired Queen of Carthage with Early Music Vancouver and re:Naissance Opera, Melissa in F. Caccini’s Alcina at the Boston Early Music Festival, and La Messaggera in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo with Ars Lyrica Houston. During the 2026-27 season, Duarte looks forward to returning engagements with Ars Lyrica Houston, Mercury Houston, Bach Collegium San Diego, Tafelmusik, Arizona Early Music, and Boston Early Music Festival, in addition to her Seattle Bach Festival debut. Past collaborations also include Piffaro, Blue Heron, and The Newberry Consort.
In 2010, Duarte created the role of Renata in the first-ever mariachi opera, José “Pepe” Martínez’s Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, which saw performances at Houston Grand Opera, San Diego Opera, Arizona Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Fort Worth Opera, El Paso Opera, Minnesota Opera, Opera San Antonio, Teatro Nacional Sucre (Ecuador), Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), and New York City Opera, among others. She also portrayed Renata in the 2019 world premiere of Javier Martínez’s El Milagro del Recuerdo, offering “singing [that goes] straight to the character’s heart” (Texas Classical Review). Other operatic roles include Linda Morales in Laura Kaminsky’s Hometown to the World, Sarelda in Robert Paterson’s The Inspector, Maria in Astor Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires, and Loma Williams in Carlisle Floyd’s Cold Sassy Tree, among others.
In 2022, Duarte recorded her first solo album, Reencuentros, a collection of Latin American folk songs described by Fanfare as “superb, featuring an ideal natural balance of presence, color, and detail.” Her second album, Lullabies, is forthcoming. Her discography also includes collaborations with the Boston Early Music Festival (Carissimi’s Jephte and Motets), the Benedict XVI Choir and Orchestra, conducted by Richard Sparks (Requiem for the Forgotten, Messe des Malades), and Houston Grand Opera (Cruzar la Cara de la Luna), among others. On film, she has played Marisol in Dreams Have No Borders and Alma in “Boundless,” the first episode of the mini-opera series Star-Cross’d.
Cecilia holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the University of Houston, as well as a second master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University. Alongside her performing career, she is a licensed therapist providing mental health services to the arts community.

CACCINI
Alcina “Melissa”
Boston Early Music Festival · June 2023
“Duarte’s mezzo has the richness and depth of a contralto which made her an imposing Melissa and her disguise as Ruggiero’s tutor, Atlante, completely convincing. She also performed the stylized movements assigned to all the characters without ever betraying the fact that she was wearing a mostly well-camouflaged orthopedic boot on her left foot.”

HANDEL
El Mesías
Bach Collegium San Diego · 2022 (Handel’s Messiah sung in Spanish)
“…mezzo-soprano Cecelia Duarte’s suave lines and compelling supplication contrasted dramatically with her raging admonition.”
— San Diego Story
Theodora “Irene”
Ars Lyrica Houston · 2025
“Duarte’s Irene is the heart of the oratorio. In one of Handel’s most beautiful arias, “As with rosy steps the morn,” Duarte intoned in assured stillness the hope that comes with the light of the coming day. Her voice is rich and resonant, yet contained and internal, as if she is holding all the light and love inside.”
— Arts and Culture Texas
“Duarte demonstrated her fierceness and vocal prowess in the Act III aria “Lord to thee each night and day,” nailing fast runs with the thundering orchestra behind her and delivering a breath-taking cadenza before the da capo. Her voice was never forced and filled the entire space with warmth.”

MARTÍNEZ, JAVIER
El Milagro del Recuerdo “Renata”
Houston Grand Opera (world premiere, 2019) · role reprised by Duarte; rev. HGO 2022
“Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Duarte, who portrayed Renata in Cruzar’s premiere, returned to the role in El Milagro, giving it an impact that suited the woman’s turbulent emotions.”
— Texas Classical Review
“When Renata first described how unhappy she was with Laurentino’s absences, Duarte brought the music agitation and tinges of bitterness. But when Renata finally revealed the loneliness inside her–how empty her home felt without her husband–Duarte’s quiet, free-of-theatrics singing went straight to the character’s heart.”
— Texas Classical Review
“Duarte’s vocals adeptly expand to match the intensity of whatever emotion is called for, be that abiding love or deep pain.”
— Houston Chronicle

— The New York Times
“Renata, powerfully sung by Cecelia Duarte, attempts to travel north to join her husband. Duarte’s voice soars and glides with a crystalline beauty.”
— OperaWire
“Cecilia Duarte is the heart of the opera and the symbol of love, family and even rebirth as she also plays the role of Renata’s granddaughter. She is superb – singing with a rich beautiful voice and dancing with a combination of grace and abandon.”
— The Opera Critic
“Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Duarte created the role of Renata and clearly continues to hold court. She has a robust voice suited to her passionate character, and her tone exudes the fierce determinedness to create a home that makes this operetta so empathetic.”
