Nicholas McGegan Discusses Recording Baroque Opera with San Francisco Classical Voice

That so many of these recordings sound so wonderful is reassuring, because that has not always been the case. “I don’t like to say this, but a lot of the operas that were written for Paris and Vienna were written for the great stars of the day,” McGegan noted. “Now, some of these are recorded by singers who, dare I say, aren’t quite as experienced as you’d like. An opera that was written for the likes of Lorraine [Hunt Lieberson] is not going to sound the same if it’s being sung by somebody [who lacks] the same great vocal personality that she had.
