Julian Perkins

Conductor

“The hero of the performance is undoubtably Julian Perkins, who conducts as if every bar means the world to him, pacing the work with assurance and drawing splendid playing from the strings of the Academy of Ancient Music”

‘Dinner with Handel’ is a pasticcio opera commissioned by Simon Weil, Chair of the Trustees of the Handel Hendrix House, Handel’s home in Brook Street, London. It was first performed with Sounds Baroque at a private ‘Handeliade’ on September 23, 2021 at Spring Hill in Gloucestershire, UK, and received its world premiere with Portland Baroque Orchestra in Portland, Oregon, USA, on February 10, 2024. Stephen Pettitt devised the scenario and wrote the words, and Julian Perkins arranged the music, composed the recitatives, and directed the performances from the harpsichord.

Scored for 5 singers and 10 instrumentalists, ‘Dinner with Handel’ is in two acts and lasts about two hours with intermission. It tells the story of a fictitious yet plausible dinner party at Handel’s London home. Tempers fray and egos are dented before Handel sees his own human frailty and seeks forgiveness and friendship.
