Irish mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy has appeared at London’s Royal Opera House, Teatro Comunale, Bologna, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Oper Frankfurt, Opera de Nice, Chicago Opera Theater, Wexford Festival Opera, Boston Lyric Opera and Opera Boston in a range of roles including the title role in Handel’s Ariodante, Annio/La Clemenza di Tito, 2nd Lady/Die Zauberflöte, Cherubino/Ghosts of Versailles, Tebaldo/Don Carlo, Helene Une Education Manquee, Ino/Semele, Baba/The Rake’s Progress, and Scipio in Glanert’s Caligula. In 2013/2014 season, she returns to Oper Frankfurt for Fulvia in Gluck’s Ezio, Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutte, Medoro in Orlando Furioso; Ascanio in Benvenuto Cellini in Terry Gilliam’s new production for English National Opera; Messiah with the Ulster Orchestra; and a concert and recording of Paul von Klenau’s Symphony 9 with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
Murrihy’s extensive concert repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s St Matthew and St John Passions, Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle and Schubert’s Mass in C. She is a frequent soloist with the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston and performed Messiah with Huddersfield Choral Society, Mendelssohn’s Elijah Utah Symphony, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse Gabrieli Consort, Paukenmesse as part of the Tanglewood season and the St Matthew Passion both for Boston Symphony Orchestra. An accomplished recitalist, she has performed at the Aldeburgh Festival, UK, New York Festival of Song, Wexford Festival and with the Irish Chamber Orchestra in the Shannon International Music Festival. She was also invited to participate in the Marilyn Horne Foundation Masterclass Series at Carnegie Hall, New York. She was the soloist in the world premiere of John Harbison’s Symphony No. 6 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Murrihy has been a Young Artist at the Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Utah Opera, Merola /San Francisco Opera Center and Tanglewood Music Center. She holds a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, where she was the recipient of the John Moriarty Presidential Scholarship and Presser Award. She received her Bachelor in Music Performance from the DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama, Dublin, Ireland.
